Why the Democrats from Sweden?
Although the party was founded in 1988, it wasn't until 1995 that it started to matter in Swedish politics. But as irregular migration grew more prevalent in Europe, particularly during the EU refugee crisis, it has gradually gained ground. The change from class politics to migration politics and the standardisation of the mainstream parties' platforms could be contributing factors to this continuous expansion. These factors may also explain the success of the Sweden Democrats and why they stand out from the other parties (Rydgren & Van der Meiden, 2018). The popularity of the Sweden Democrats has increased concurrently with the continuous collapse of the Social Democrats due to the rise in crime rates and gang activity, as well as the lingering economic impacts of the COVID-19 crisis and the Russian invasion of Ukraine (Diehn, 2022). According to Voa News (2018), the Social Democrats received a record-low 28.5 percent of the vote in the 2018 elections, falling short of what voters had hoped for the party.
